......Colin Roy Powell...... a k a..... (K G 1) Was born in Harlesden, (London) in the early seventies from a sturn Jamaican parentage & christian upbringing going to baptist church every sunday & singing praises to the lord god. Music was played alot in his household,mainly by his father & older brother bursting out rhythms from rocksteady to lovers rock and soca music & on the streets & community of the N W area of London.(K G 1), Started dj -ing, mic chanting at the tender age of 14 years old pon a reggae soundsystem called ( Freedom Hi-fi / Power). A local sound in the Harrow region managed by a soundman called Justin (MANAGER), who built the sound after coming over from the west indies( Jamaica)in the late seventies. First Playing at house parties and blues dances in the london region and outer London ( K G 1 ) started to get a reputation for then being a operator & selector of music which is his first love, Playing music from reggae to soul,Hiphop,garage & jungle mixing up the records and different genres of music to good effort .After listening to sounds like King Jammys , Stereograph, Kilimanjaro and attending several dances with Saxon / Volcano / Sovereign / Tippertone / Ambassador / Unity & even Sir Coxsone.. ( K G 1 ), got more feeling for the reggae tradition vibes playing at the Notting Hill Carnival for the first time in 1986 & then in the following years leading up to the late 1990’s,still combining playing tunes & mic talking and building up the vibes pon Freedom Sound until leaving the sound in 1993... Following he’s departure from Freedom Hi-power, ( K G ) as he was called back then, managed to put pen to paper & write lyrics down of events & tings which was happening in his life to good effect. In 1994, (K G 1 )met up with soundsystem owner, ( Big Man Denton ) who was building up a sound, naming it - ( ITAL SOUND ) and playing music from reggae to lovers to roots and soul.. There ( K G 1 ) started to show some real talent combining lyrics on the mic and also selecting music for various sets of crowds of people from the young youths dem to the older generation.. His love of studio 1,dancehall & uptempo reggae is what ( K G 1 ) loved to play most of all & that is where he really become to come of age and the following of different individuals became to form.....
